2011 19th Competition

LONG LENGTH FILM CATEGORY Animals United
Director; Reinhard Kloss, Holger Tappe, Germany/2010/93min/Translation: Rinko Asano
Inspired by Erick Kastner’s classic children’s tale “The Animal’s Conference”, who also wrote “Lottie and Lisa” (adapted into film, “The Parent Trap”) and “The Flying Classroom”.
The animals unite to stand up to humans destroying the nature.

Billy the meerkat and the peaceful lion Socrates, were joined by Kangaroo Toby, Lady polar bear Sushi and giant turtles Winston and Winifred to go to the Valley of Death in search of water. On their way, they see that humans are creating a huge water dam, and that is the reason of water shortage where they live. The Okavango animals are determined to fight with the humans to get back their water…

A message from film directors, Reinhard Kloss and Holger Tappe to the Japanese audience!
We are very pleased and grateful to be allowed to present “Animals United” in Tokyo. Of course, “Animals United” is a funny film – but, just as in life, it has not only comical but also serious aspects. In our film, humanity’s depletion of nature leads the animals to resolve no longer to leave the fate of our world in the hands of humanity – or, better said, the grown-ups.
For, as the wise tortoise Winifred says in the film: “The Earth does not belong to man. He is only a tiny part of it. We all share the same breath – the plants, man and all of the animals.” In 1871 when the Native American Chief Seattle said these very words to the American President, he meant that the destruction of nature by the white settlers would have disastrous consequences. His words have – sadly – even today lost none of their meaning “Animals United” is set in Okavango in Africa - but it could just as well be set anywhere in the world.

The Runway
Director: Ian Power/ Ireland, Luxembourg/ 101 mins./ 2010/ Translation: Miyuki Sato
Inspired by the true story of a South American pilot who landed his plane near Mallow, in 1983. A story about the friendship between a pilot and a little boy.
The story takes place in a little town in Ireland. The town was once flourished by its glass factories but is now filled with unemployed people. 9 years old Paco lives with his mother Grace, and studies Spanish listening to a cassette tape every night believing that his father is Spanish. One day, an airplane crashes on a hill Paco and his best friend made imitating“E.T.” The pilot of the plane is a Colombian, Ernerst. For Ernest who can only speak Spanish, Paco becomes the interpreter. Because of his far-from-perfect Spanish, misunderstandings occur. The townspeople feel sorry for Ernest that they volunteer to fix the crashed plane…

A message from film director Ian Power!
'The Runway' is the true story of ordinary people doing an extra–ordinary thing during a difficult time - a time when Ireland was very poor and there was little to look forward to. But it is not a sad film. It is a film about hope and faith - a film about how, in the most difficult times, people unite and do fantastic things. And when people do unite it is the young people they look to for inspiration. Like the little boy in our story, I know that you are already inspiring the hopes and dreams of the adults around you, and you should be very proud of that.Your success is guaranteed. I know this because the only people who are more resilient than the Irish are the Japanese! You are in our thoughts and prayers – and we all believe in you.

A cardboard animation; story based on Aesop’s Fables
A wolf with all the habits of a human, tries to dress as a shepherd to be more “humanly”. He walks up to the herd of sheep but….

A message from film director Rebecca Akoun!
The fables of Jean de La Fontaine are well known in France and are considered an important part of French literature. Today, however, the younger generation finds difficulties to connect to them because of the dated language. By adapting one of his fables to an animated picture I wanted to help the young viewers to discover the world of La Fontaine and make it available to other audiences around the world.

A message from film director Dace Riduze!
Perhaps our best memories are those from childhood. I have to smile when I look at my old dolls and toys, now my children’s playthings. When we sit down to read books from the time when I was a child, it turns out my favourite story heroes touch my children too! One such favourite story friend was the little acorn boy from artist Margarita Stāraste’s storybook, Acorn Boy. As a child I wondered what the funny, little acorn boy would be like if he could really walk, run and talk…And now I had the opportunity to let him to come to life on screen in a puppet animation film! I hope that together with Acorn Boy our young viewers find more joy in learning to walk, making new

The bigbrother

“A children’s film which focuses on the fun and cruelty of being a child”2 characters in a flip book start establishing lives of their own “inside the paper”. The kind of lives…moving around when the artist isn’t there or pulling pranks…

A message from director Jesus Perez!
I am very happy, you came to see the "BIG BROTHER", even though he just is a paper drawing creature. I am sure, also he is very happy, to make this show for you.Dear children, may be you want to ask me, how come the little figures start moving and become alive. Then I must answer you, that it needs a lot of work; at least 6 month and 4500 drawings of the figures. So many are necessary, because for every little movement I have to make a dozen drawings.May be you also would ask me, if the little figures and the "BIG BROTHER" were already alive, when I was drawing them. Then I must tell you, no they were not alive. They only started to live, when we, together with the cameraman took photos of the drawings.Really alive and happy are,the three figures, when they appear like today in a movie theatre and children like you can see them.

Director: Geze M. Toth/ Hungary/ 5 mins./ Translation: Atsuko Nakata
What will Berry and Dolly do today? A popular animation series in Hungary!
Berry the snail and Dolly the lady bug are best friends. They gather to perform a musical event….

A message from director Geza M. Toth!
In Hungary where I am living, most of children live in big towns just like you here in Tokyo. Similarly to you, they are familiar with city life, but they can rarely lie down in the grass for admiring the life of little animals.
Maybe that is the reason why Hungarian children like so much our cartoons about the stories of Berry, the snailboy, Dolly, the ladybird and their friends. We have produced 26 short films in that have appeared more than 100 kind little characters, becoming good friends of Hungarian televiewer kids. I hope much that many children in Japan get to like them soon as well."

A message from director Zofie Zajickova!
Did it ever happen to you, that while you were walking in the town a pear suddenly landed next to you? Well, it happened to the protagonist of this story. Thanks to this event he discovers a whole new world, somehow strange to him (for instance, plants there grow differently from what one would expect) but also very beautiful. No plants grow there where he comes from. Soon he finds out that there is something missing even in the other colourful world. The place isn’t just beautiful but also devastated. Film making, for me,is where the magic happens. The ideato ‘make-believe’, and the limitless possibilities of visual story telling is something that I have always loved about film. When I was a kid I became fascinated by how these stories were made and the idea that we can have these shared memories and experiences with cinema. My family would take out our old home movies that were recorded on a Super 8 camera and watch them play through what is now a very dated project or and screen. It is always great funtos it back, have a laugh, and reflecton those moments of my childhood. Deland Tay(23)

•Cinematographer of “Play Lunch”. He will make a speech at the Chofu premiere!
enjoy telling stories with a motion camera and sharing these stories with others. When I was a little boy, I would record my own videos on a nold video camera. My sister, cousins, and I would also actin these videos, which were usually parodies of television shows that we used to watch. Because we didn't have any computers with editing devices back then, the editing and special effects were done entirely within the camera. It was veryful filling when we were able to show these videos to our families and receive many laughs from them. Likes:Overcastdays, Pixar, EastFreoF.C.,Scrabble Dislikes:Clear blue skies, loud cars, smoke

Fun and Exciting Friends at the 19th Kinder Film Festival, 2011

Thanks to all the street performers and clowns playing with children at the conference hall before screening times!

The Clown-Miena Team participated in both the Hibiya and Chofu venues!
• The "Innocent Spirit" group of the Clown-Miena WSP team performed and interacted with attendees at both the venues. “Clown Tom” acts pretty silly sometimes but has a very kind heart! The Colombine Clown “Yuu” is loved by everyone for her special balancing acts and for her sweet character. The juggling show which showed off the teams special flexibility and dexterity became everyone`s favorite program and brought many smiles and applause. During the Clown Miena’s show stage, three clowns joined to perform pantomime, entertaining all and increasing the festive atmosphere.
